Explore every building permit in Calgary
A free, public tool for browsing the City of Calgary's building-permit records — from a backyard garage to a downtown tower. Choose a neighbourhood, a year range, or a type of work, and every number, chart, map bubble and table row below updates at once.
About How this works & where the data comes from
Live, not stored
Every chart is built on the spot by querying the City of Calgary's open-data API the moment you open this page. Nothing is cached or hand-entered — change a filter and the questions are re-run against the live dataset.
City view vs. detail view
With a broad filter (hundreds of thousands of permits) the tool shows city totals computed by the server. Narrow things down below ~30,000 permits — one community, or a single year city-wide — and it automatically switches to detail view: individual permits on the map, the records table, median costs, and renovation-lifecycle analysis.
What the numbers mean
- Estimated cost is the applicant's projected construction value — not final or assessed value. Some permits have no cost on file.
- Days to issue = issued date − applied date.
- Completion rate = completed ÷ resolved permits (excludes ones still in review or on hold).
- Renovation lifecycle pairs a new build with the first later non-demolition permit at the same address.
- Map bubbles use the average location of permits in each community.
